but what on earth is he talking about?

Well, we’re not trying to send a car into space (or trying to track that it – Tesla might know where it is if we did) but we have recorded journey distances that are the equivalent to traveling all the way to the moon and back again… THREE times a day!  That’s a lot of driver scoring journeys!

So, what is this data and what do we do with it?

Well, the short answer to this question is that it all depends on what our customers are looking for.  Our CTO pointed out during a recent conversation that no two of our customers have the exact same hardware or software offering. All our customers want slightly different solutions which require different connection points into the vehicle, different data recording frequency, different data being recorded and so on.  Luckily, Redtail spawned from a Consultancy company (Plextek) which is used to this, so we’re very well versed in coming up with new solutions to accommodate a new requirement!

A great example of this is recent addition to our arsenal is Battery Health Monitoring.  Redtail devices have always recorded the vehicle battery and, if the device has an internal battery, then we also record the internal device battery too.  It wasn’t until recently that quite a few of our customers started asking to have access to this data so they could monitor their devices in one easy to find location.

As a result, we recently launched our “Vehicle Battery Health” and “Device Battery Health” monitoring on the Redtail Platform.

Our Platform works as a one-stop-shop for our customers to manage all their devices in one place and it’s a big hit with those who use it.  There are many features already available to our customers via our Platform such as Driver Scoring, Incidents, Journeys and more (all equally as interesting), but we’ll just focus on the battery monitoring for now.

The Vehicle Battery Health section tells customers how well their customer’s battery is performing – hugely helpful because no one wants to be caught with a flat battery with no civilization around to help rescue them jump start the car.

The Device Battery Health section monitors how the internal device battery is performing so customers can monitor whether any devices look like they need a new battery.  Not all Redtail devices have internal batteries but those that do come in rechargeable or non-rechargeable varieties (customers’ choice!) so this feature would, for example, allow customers with non-rechargeable batteries to check when their battery needs replacing.
